Supply chain disruptions have become a persistent challenge for businesses worldwide. While the acute crises of recent years have eased, new risks continue to emerge — from geopolitical tensions and trade policy changes to climate-related events and shipping capacity constraints. Building a resilient supply chain is no longer optional; it's a competitive necessity.

Diversification is the foundation of resilience. Relying on a single distant market creates dangerous single points of failure. For many Nordic businesses, Turkey has become the ideal 'plus one' – or even primary – sourcing destination. Its geographic proximity to Europe, stable production environment, and strong manufacturing base provide a reliable alternative with significantly lower risk exposure compared to far-away regions.

Inventory strategy is being reassessed. The just-in-time approach that dominated for decades is giving way to 'just-in-case' thinking. While holding more inventory increases working capital requirements, the cost is often justified by the avoided losses from stockouts – especially when shorter lead times from Turkey make buffer stock more manageable.

Nearshoring is accelerating – and Turkey is at the forefront. European businesses are increasingly sourcing from Turkey instead of — or in addition to — distant Asian markets. The benefits are clear: much shorter lead times (often 7–14 days by road/sea), easier communication (time zone alignment with Europe), lower minimum order quantities, better quality control visibility, and greatly reduced exposure to long-haul shipping disruptions and freight cost volatility.

Technology is playing an increasingly important role. Supply chain visibility platforms, AI-powered demand forecasting, and blockchain-based traceability systems are helping businesses anticipate and respond to disruptions more quickly. Even smaller companies can now access these tools through SaaS platforms – tools that become even more powerful when paired with a nearby partner like Turkey.

Strong supplier relationships are your best insurance policy. Suppliers who see you as a valued partner — not just a transaction — are more likely to prioritize your orders during capacity constraints, alert you early to potential problems, and work collaboratively to find solutions when issues arise. Long-term partnerships with Turkish manufacturers are especially valuable due to cultural alignment and fast response times.

Regular risk assessments should be part of your routine. Map your supply chain end-to-end, identify critical dependencies, assess the likelihood and impact of various disruption scenarios, and develop contingency plans for the highest-risk areas.
